This 11+ Reading Comprehension Club is designed for children in Year 5 who need to boost their reading comprehension skills and learn how to write clear, structured answers as well as answer multiple choice questions. It is perfect for children sitting 11+ exam exams to independent and grammar schools.

In the Autumn Term  your child will learn how to tackle 11+ reading comprehension passages with increasing confidence. They will learn the tips and techniques to help them answer reading comprehension passages with accuracy and flair!

Your child will study a variety of contemporary and classic fiction from past exam papers and other sources. 

The main focus of the lessons in the Autumn Term is on answering written questions but your child will learn how to approach multiple choice questions (GL/CEM/ISEB/London Consortium) as well. 

Week 1Introduction to reading comprehension: how to read (skimming and scanning) and how to annotate passages for meaning. 

Week 2Summarising: how to answer ‘in your own words’ type of questions. 

Week 3Simple inference questions. How to find clues in the text and read between the lines. Skimming and scanning for synonyms.

Week 4 – Words in context. How to use different techniques to deduce the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

Week 5Multiple choice questions. How to answer multiple choice questions.

Week 6 More inference practice. How to embed quotations in answers using point-evidence-explain technique.

Week 7Author’s use of language.  How to answer questions on language features such as similes, metaphors, etc, and to analyse their effects.

Week 8 Introduction to poetry comprehension – how to read and analyse a poem for meaning. 

Week 9Evaluation questions including character analysis. How to evaluate a text using personal experience and textual evidence to write a detailed answer.

Week 10Revision of all question types. A mock test will be set for homework. Results and a detailed report will be sent with suggestions for further practice.
