The 11+ Reading Comprehension Club is designed for children in Year 5 who need to boost their reading comprehension skills and learn how to write clear, structured answers as well as answer multiple choice questions. It is perfect for children sitting 11+ exam exams to independent and grammar schools.
In the Spring Term your child will learn how to tackle 11+ reading comprehension passages with increasing confidence. They will learn the tips and techniques to help them answer reading comprehension passages with accuracy and flair!
Your child will study a variety of contemporary and classic fiction from past exam papers and other sources.
The main focus of the lessons in the Spring Term is on answering written questions but your child will learn how to approach multiple choice questions (GL/CEM/ISEB/London Consortium) as well. During the term, your child will learn and/or revise the following skills:

Simple and complex inference questions. How to find clues in the text and read between the lines. Skimming and scanning for synonyms. How to embed quotations in answers using point-evidence-explain technique.
Words in context. How to use different techniques to deduce the meaning of an unfamiliar word.
Author’s use of language. How to answer questions on language features such as similes, metaphors, etc, and to analyse their effects.
Poetry – how to read and analyse a poem for meaning.
