The 11+ Reading Comprehension Club is designed for children in Year 5 who need to boost their reading comprehension skills and learn how to write clear, structured answers as well as answer multiple choice questions. It is perfect for children sitting competitive 11+ exam exams to independent and grammar schools in 2024.

Your child will learn how to tackle 11+ reading comprehension passages with increasing confidence. They will learn the tips and techniques to help them answer reading comprehension passages with accuracy and flair!

The course runs throughout the academic year 2023-2024 over three terms.

Throughout the course, your child will study a variety of contemporary and classic fiction, non-fiction and poetry from past exam papers and other sources.

This course is taught by Coriden Francis.

The main focus of the lessons in the Autumn Term is on answering written questions but your child will learn how to approach multiple choice questions (GL/CEM/ISEB/London Consortium) as well.

In the Spring Term your child will learn how to tackle poetry comprehension, non-fiction comprehension and how to compare two different texts (Sutton).

The Summer Term is dedicated to exam practice! Your child will learn the exam tips and techniques to answer both multiple-choice and traditional structured comprehension papers.

During the Autumn Term, your child will learn the following skills:

How to read and annotate passages for meaning.

Summarising: how to answer ‘in your own words’ type of questions.

Simple and complex inference questions. How to find clues in the text and read between the lines. Skimming and scanning for synonyms. How to embed quotations in answers using point-evidence-explain technique.

Words in context. How to use different techniques to deduce the meaning of an unfamiliar word.

Author’s use of language.  How to answer questions on language features such as similes, metaphors, etc, and to analyse their effects.

Evaluation questions including character analysis. How to evaluate a text using personal experience and textual evidence to write a detailed answer.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

Just wanted to let you know that O has been offered places at our first choice independent school. He also received offers from the other schools we applied to! Thank you so much for your guidance and advice throughout the Reading Comprehension Course!
MRS B CHAN

Thank you for all your help and the amazing support you provided for H during 2020. You were really fantastic at delivering what is needed to ensure H passed the English 11+ exams without any of the pressure.

You went the extra mile during the Covid pandemic and gave your full commitment to ensure H’s was successful in achieving his goals.

It is obvious that this is far more than a business to you and you relish seeing your pupils achieve their full potential.

He was entered into 4 Grammar School 11+ entrance exams and he passed all of them achieving  ranking in the top 2%.

We are ever grateful for your efforts and highly recommend Coriden English Tuition.
