The Writing for Specific Purposes Course is designed for children in Years 4-6 who would like to develop their fiction and non-fiction writing skills further. It is also suitable for children who are preparing for 11+ entrance exams.

This course will give students the opportunity to deepen and refine their current fiction writing skills. In addition, your child will learn now to write a variety of non-fiction texts as required by independent schools and many grammar schools in round two of the entrance exam. During the course, your child will learn how to write using more sophisticated sentences and punctuation as well as other advanced writing techniques.

Your child will learn how to write:

  • a personal recount
  • a description of a place and character
  • continuing a story
  • a formal persuasive letter
  • poetry
  • a newspaper article
  • a discursive essay
  • a short play script
  • a narrative story (thriller, fantasy/adventure)

An assessment task is set before the course starts.  Parents will receive regular feedback on their child’s progress during the term and a written report at the end of the course.

By the end of this creative writing course, your child will be able to tackle a variety of texts with confidence and skill and at a higher level.

Homework is set weekly and is essential part of the course. It is marked in accordance with the criteria set for creative writing as demanded by 11+ entrance exams to leading independent and grammar schools.

Lessons are taught by Coriden Francis MA (Oxon).

All lessons take place on Zoom.

The course runs for 10 weeks.

Class size is a maximum of six children.

Each session lasts 90 minutes.

Cost: £450  for 10 weeks.

All learning materials and an initial assessment  are included.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

Although my son is a voracious reader, his writing skills have always been quite poor. When I came across Coriden, I wasn’t expecting miracles; I was hoping for a few tips and ideas to guide him. However, in just a few weeks, Coriden has magically transformed my son into a budding writer. She’s done the impossible – for the first time, he believes that he can actually create a coherent, engaging piece of writing and this is more than I could have ever asked.
MRS M SZCZPANIAK

I just wanted to let you know about school offers. J has received offers from all the schools he applied to, with scholarships from Merchant Taylor’s, City of London Boys and John Lyon. Thank you for helping J in achieving this.

Thank you for all your help and the amazing support you provided for H during 2020. You were really fantastic at delivering what is needed to ensure H passed the English 11+ exams without any of the pressure. You went the extra mile during the Covid pandemic and gave your full commitment to ensure H’s was successful in achieving his goals. It is obvious that this is far more than a business to you and you relish seeing your pupils achieve their full potential. He was entered into 4 Grammar School 11+ entrance exams and he passed all of them achieving  ranking in the top 2%. We are ever grateful for your efforts and highly recommend Coriden English Tuition.
