Intensive Course

This 11+ Reading Comprehension Intensive Course is designed for children in Year 5 who need to boost their reading comprehension skills and learn how to answer multiple choice questions as well as write clear, structured answers. It is perfect for children sitting 11+ exam exams to independent and grammar schools.

Over 5 mornings (10 hours) your child will learn how to tackle 11+ reading comprehension passages with confidence. They will learn the tips and techniques to help them answer reading comprehension passages with accuracy and flair!

The main focus of the course is on answering written questions but your child will learn how to approach multiple choice questions (GL/CEM/ISEB) as well.

Day 1 – Introduction to reading comprehension: how to read (skimming and scanning) and annotate passages for meaning. How to answer literal questions. Summarising: how to answer ‘in your own words’ type of questions. Simple inference questions: how to find clues in the text and read between the lines. Skimming and scanning for synonyms. How to make sense of unfamiliar words in context.

Day 2 – How to search for complex inference clues in different parts of the texts and link them together to write more detailed answers. How to write structured answers using the Point-Evidence-Explain structure. Evaluation questions including character analysis. How to evaluate a text using personal experience and textual evidence to write a detailed answer.

Day 3 – Authorial intent questions. How to answer questions on language features such as similes, metaphors, sentence structure and length and to analyse their effects. How to answer questions on atmosphere and mood in fiction.

Day 4 – Poetry Comprehension – How to analyse a poem for structure, meaning, language and emotion. How to answer both structured and and multiple choice questions.

Day 5 – Revision of all question types and exam technique focus.
